Founders Markey Grandberry and Derrick Robinson have proven that they have the marketing savvy to make Mo’ Money Taxes a market leader. Mo’ Money Taxes is the largest independent tax company in Tennessee, and everybody involved believes this phenomenon will continue to roll on. The success of these two cousins came from a desire to succeed from the very start. In 1995, Mo’ Money Taxes started from the humble beginnings of a 12 x 7 back- office in a current Memphis location. They rented the space for $200 per month. At the time they started their business, Grandberry and Robinson were still working at their former jobs. Grandberry was a jewelry wholesaler and Robinson worked for Federal Express. The first year they saw their part-time business grow into what some would call an overnight success.

“Our first year in operation, we processed 450 returns and just knew we were on to something. The second year we went into the thousands…”

After their third tax season (1998), the national chains H&R Block and Jackson-Hewitt began to take note. Jackson-Hewitt corporate executive Rodney Brown was dispatched to Memphis with instructions to buy Mo’ Money Taxes; however, the only thing that he acquired was part of a dream. Brown

“What I remember from our first meetings was that Grandberry was a little shocked and excited to hear about how successful their numbers were in comparison to other independent tax preparation firms; however, he told me that if I wanted to make some real money, I should open a Mo’ Money Taxes. Unbeknownst to them, but with permission, I did open a location before the next tax season in Montgomery, AL. Problem was, I had the name, but I had no marketing game.”

Over the next several years, Grandberry, Robinson and Brown began the process of refining the marketing brand, defining in-store procedures, training procedures, developing support functions, and adding new locations. Careful not to outgrow their capacity of support in growth, Mo’ Money Taxes enters its second decade poised for explosive growth.

“The beautiful part about what we have done is reducing the trial-and-error that plagues new businesses. We are going to give you the recommendations that can make you successful in growing a customer base. The great thing about repeat customers is the word repeat.”

The associated press reported recently that roughly 300,000 small businesses opened this year, and 400,000 small businesses closed this year. One in four small businesses make it three years, one in five make it five years.

What do you get when you mix a regional phenomenon with a proven industry executive? A great chance at success for you. Let us help you beat the odds.
